As part of a community sport we all play our part… chauffeur, cheer squad, calendar keeper and more!
The STARS Basketball Club is inclusive for players of all backgrounds and ability and focusses on helping players to learn and grow through the sport we love.
We owe our success to every person who volunteers their time and effort to help children learn and play basketball.
Our coaches, team managers and the committee working behind the scenes to make everything possible.
We're always looking for more volunteers and if you'd like to get involved with our club at any level, read on!
Learn how to score
All parents and carers are expected to take turns scoring during games. If it’s your first time, don’t worry – start by watching the instructional video provided to get familiar with the process. You can also ask someone from the team to sit with you and guide you through your first game. Most people find it easy after a few goes, and support is always available until you feel confident scoring on your own.
Digital scoresheet
At the beginning of the game tap all players who are playing in the game that day. Double check that their number is correct.
As play unfolds, tap each scoring button (1, 2 or 3 points) for every made basket, register fouls by selecting the player.
At breaks, and half time double check with the other teams scorer that you are both aligned, then resume scoring. After the final buzzer, review totals, tap “Submit,” and sync to update the league database.
For more information see the Play HQ website.
Scoreboard
The Referees will set the clock at the start of the game. The electronic scoreboard at each stadium is slightly different, but all very easy to use. Use the control panel to update scores and track fouls. If a player is on 4 fouls let the team manager or coach know.
You are also responsible for ‘turning the arrow or cone’ during the game to show who has possession of the ball in a ‘jump ball’ situation.
Ensure accuracy and stay focused—it's vital for players, referees, and spectators throughout the game.
-
If you love the game, love helping kids, and want to help the game continue to grow then volunteer to coach a team!
-
The benefits of coaching:
Developing rewarding friendships with players and parents.
Contributing to the players’ life-skills and character building.
Sharing a sense of fun and achievement with your players.
Helping individuals become a cohesive team.
Learning new skills and techniques (and gain recognised coaching accreditation).
Spending more time with your child (if you are a parent or relative of a child in the team).
Giving back to the club and/or sport.

In order to help out at the Club, you need to have a current Working with Children Check. If you haven’t got one, don’t worry! It can easily be applied for online, is free for volunteers and lasts for five years.
-
Team Managers share weekly game details, scoring rosters, player availability, fill-ins, and act as a link between the club and team.
-
Team manager responsibilities mainly involve:
Sending weekly notifications regarding game time and venue.
Rostering parents to scoring.
Knowing if players will be absent and letting the coach know.
Seeking fill in players if the team is short or notifying the club if the team needs to forfeit (we try to avoid forfeits).
Communicating any (unusual) last minute changes to the venue, cancellation of games or forfeits received.
The team manager is also the intermediary between the club and the families in each team. This involves eventually collecting information regarding who will be returning for the following season and contacting the club with any queries or concerns.
